The one simple way to engage your employees in the digital age

When in September last year Apple released their iOS 12 update, screen time was introduced and revealed quite how reliant we are on our phones. Since tracking phone-use began, it’s found the average adult spends three hours a day on their phone. If you’re between 18-24 years old, it’s closer to four hours.

This means the average smartphone user spends an entire day on their phone each week.

But what are they doing with all this time? Time that could be spent working, learning, growing or sharing new and interesting information? Realistically, it’s more likely to be time spent mindlessly scrolling on Instagram, Facebook and any other number of entertainment apps. Imagine the potential if you could capture this time and put it towards something good.

 

How much time do you spend on your phone?

With Screen Time, you can access real-time reports about how much time you spend on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can even set limits and time allowances for specific usage you want to manage.

To turn on Screen Time:

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Turn On Screen Time.
  3. Tap Continue.
  4. Select This is My [device] or This is My Child’s [device].
  5. You can now get a report about how you use your device, apps, and websites, any time you want.

 

You’re competing for time

We’re living in a fast-paced world, where multitasking is the norm and attention spans are shorter than our patience for politics. We’re constantly connected to each other, to current affairs and the news, to our friends and family, and to strangers.

We expect access to everything we need (and want) instantly. We rely on our phones for everything; distraction and connection, communication, travel, news, shopping, music and tracking and improving diet, fitness, fertility, mental health and more. You name it, an app can do it.

So why is it, that when we get to work, the systems slow down? Clunky intranets and desktop-only services are still a familiar sight in an office.

 

The app epidemic

A lot of big businesses resist technology change for a number of reasons, including concerns about security and financial commitments. But there are solutions on offer that combat these concerns and guarantee steady improvement – you just have to know where to look!

Technology is changing so fast there’s a risk you might blink and miss it. You then run the risk of falling behind, becoming outdated and letting your competitors get ahead.

A mere five years ago, how many more of us visited the banks regularly and used cash? Now, we can view our statements and manage our money from our phones in a matter of seconds. Cash has become old money. If banks hadn’t recognised these changes and provided apps and online services, they would have been cast aside by customers hungry for more accessible money management services.

Big businesses now face the same challenges. Embrace the steady rise in mobile app technology adoption and use it to your advantage.

Research shows that there are between 60 and 90 apps installed on the average smartphone.

Businesses must recognise that apps are a crucial part of day-to-day living. Rather than resisting mobile technologies, level the playing field against the average 30 apps your people use every month, and give them one more, and make it good.

 

If you can’t beat them, join them

By integrating with employee preferences and engaging with their personal tastes, the change adoption is minimal.

You’re catering to existing habits, rather than requiring users to form new ones.

Adopting habits your employees already have is a great way to transform company culture without the process feeling laborious. Think about how many times a day a person logs in to their intranet on desktop, versus how many times a day they check an app. Which is easier and comes more naturally? Apps, every time.

Many significant business problems can be solved with communication and learning experience platforms, from poor communication to an inundation of emails where the important messages are diluted or lost. Breaking these bad habits and replacing them with simple and time-efficient solutions can be done.
